History of Glendale, Arizona
Sahuaro Ranch was the first official residence in what is now Glendale, Arizona. In 1886, William H. Bartlett, pilgrim and settler, built his 640-acre fruit farm. The farmer constructed a main homestead along with 13 outbuildings. However, it was William J. Murphy and three other innovators, Clark Churchill, M.W. Kales and William A. Hancock, who made Bartlett’s land inhabitable.
The four pioneers brought water into the region by using 225 mules and machinery from the era. The men labored until they built a canal, which they completed in May of 1885. In 1888, Murphy and his men constructed the transversely shaped Grand Avenue.
A few years later, the suburban area of the city grew along with the Glendale Grammar School in 1895. After the school opened, people began building homes nearby, and the city grew large enough for the Santa Fe Railroad to run a line through it.
Stanford University graduate, Victor E. Messinger, settled in Glendale and helped start the city’s first library. Messinger used 400 books from his personal collection, and the structure was built where Murphy Park now stands.
Glendale continued to grow during the early 1900s, and in 1909, the Glendale State Bank opened. In 1915, the Sine family sold the town’s water unit to the city, and a rich lumberman by the name of Louis M. Sands purchased one of the city’s large ranch homes. The Sands home is currently on display as one of the town’s classic homes with visitors and residents able to view the preserved home as its prior owners once enjoyed it.
Glendale is a culturally varied city since a large amount of its culture comes from early Hispanic pilgrims. Additionally, many California settlers, originally from Japan and Russia, relocated to Glendale. The city also received a boost to its job market by the Glendale Beet Sugar Factory, which is still standing.
Both World Wars brought an increase to the city’s economy. As a result of World War II, the Army constructed Thunderbird Field in 1941. Glendale continued to grow, and the increase in residents encouraged the addition of parks, schools and Northwest Hospital.
During the 1990s, the city became the site for construction projects like Manistee Towne Center, Lowes and Wal-Mart.
New Glendale inhabitants will need to invest in a quality air conditioning unit as the weather is extremely hot during the summer months. However, residents experience comfortable winters and can enjoy spending time outdoors during the months that most people snuggle in front of a fireplace to keep warm.
