Keeping your air conditioner's coils clean is vital to ensuring that it works to the best of its ability. Cleaning the coils is important to its efficiency and will keep your air conditioner working properly for years to come.

Typically, air conditioning units have two sets of coils that are found in the front and the back. On the inside, you will find the evaporator coil. On the outside, you will find the condenser coils. These coils consist of copper tubing that are covered by sharp metal fins and should be carefully handled. Cleaning the coils will allow for proper ventilation while minimizing energy loss from inefficient cooling.

To begin, shut off the power to the air conditioning unit and remove the grill off of the front. Many air conditioner grills will have clips or a couple of screws that hold it in place. Once the grill has been removed, detach the air filter to gain access to the internal coils. Next, use a vacuum with a hose attachment to remove dust and debris off of the coils.

For coils that are especially dirty, it may be necessary to use coil cleaner to continue cleaning. Let the cleaner sit for up to five minutes before removing dirt using a coil brush. Wipe down additional dirt using a towel and allow to dry before vacuuming once more. You should then use a fin comb to straighten out the metal fins on the front of the coils to maximize the air conditioner's ability to extract ambient heat from a room. Repeat this process on the external fins as well to allow for maximum airflow.

Before turning on your air conditioning unit, it is recommended to allow the coils to dry completely. The air filter and grill should be replaced before reattaching the screws or clips. Plug in the air conditioning unit prior to testing out its ability to cool down a room. By cleaning your air conditioner periodically, it is possible to reduce energy consumption and guarantee that your unit will continue working for an extended amount of time.
