History of Mesa AZ
Mesa, Arizona is in Maricopa County. It is a suburb of Phoenix. As of 2010, it is the heart of Arizona’s population.
The history of Mesa began 2000 years ago when the Hohokam people arrived. They built the first canal systems, which were the most extensive, developed in the prehistoric times of the New World. By 1100 AD, the canals, extending over 15 miles, carried water to over 100,000 acres in the desert and remain in use.
During the later part of the 1800s, the US army suppressed the Apache and provided an opening for the settlement of the area.
Mormon settlers from Utah and Idaho established communities in the Mesa area in the later part of the 1800s. Lehi, near the northern part of Mesa, was created in 1877, and another, first called Jonesville and then Fort Utah, settled at the peak of the mesa that gives the city its name. This group developed the original Hohokam canals to irrigate the land.
Mesa City registered officially as a town of in July 1878. The townspeople built the first school in 1879. In 1883, Mesa City became incorporated with a census of 300 people. In 1895, the Mesa Canal was widened, permitting the stream of enough water to construct a plant to provide electrical power. As the city owned the power plant, the proceeds from this plant provided sufficient money to cover city budget until the 1960s.
During the Great Depression, the town used WPA funds to pave the streets and build a library, town hall and hospital.
The military opened both Williams Field and Falcon Field during the early part of the 1940s. The number of military personnel grew.
