Replacing thermostat
If you are thinking of upgrading your thermostat and installing a new programmable thermostat, it is an easy start for a do it yourself project. Upgrading your old thermostat to a new electronic programmable thermostat is not only easy but can save you as much as 15% of your electric cost.
When shopping for a new programmable thermostat make sure the one you buy will work with your system as some are made for gas heat and some for heat pumps only. Read up on the different thermostats as many have functions that others do not have.
My favorite has always been the Honeywell brand thermostats , the vision pro 8000 is one of the better programmable thermostats and is also a touch screen thermostat. This thermostat is for residential or light commercial applications, including gas, oil, or electric systems. Featuring a large, clear display with backlighting, the current temperature, set temperature and time are easy-to-read and are all displayed on the home screen. The real-time clock keeps time even during a power failure and will automatically update for daylight saving time. Other features include temperature range stops, to prevent the user from setting the temperature too high or too low. Change reminders remind you to service or replace the air filter, humidifier pad, ultraviolet lamp or thermostat batteries. The adaptive intelligent recovery feature ensures programmed temperature is reached by the programmed time. And a lock option to keep the kids from turning the temperature way down.
So now you have purchased your new thermostat, the first step is to turn off breaker or breakers to your air conditioning system. Your unit may have more than one if you have a split system you may have a furnace breaker, or you may have a breaker labeled air handle. Double check and make sure power is off.
Remove thermostat from the wall , removing the wiring, make sure you write down were every wire went this will help is the color is not the same . In most cases the colors will be the same .
The green wire will go to G terminal on the thermostat (in some units it may be brown )
The yellow wire will go to the Y terminal on the thermostat
If you write down were every wire came off the old thermostat you should not have any problems with the install of the new thermostat
Follow the instructions on the new thermostat , turn power back on and test when finished.
